In Italy, I was Korean. In Korea, I had to be Italian. The story of who I was changed with my surroundings and the people looking at me. My work with reality and virtual worlds began with this experience.
Making fake documentaries, I explored how form and genre could persuade viewers. They accepted fictional stories presented in documentary form as fact. When I moved into XR, viewers could manipulate virtual objects directly with their hands. At the moment an object felt real, I wanted them to look back at the grounds for that belief. I was wary of belief hardening into certainty without its basis ever being questioned.
As I continued working with generative AI, I also began asking what an image meant to me. I made large numbers of random images and obtained convincing results, yet felt little for them. By chance, I used my wife’s face in a work and felt attached to an image for the first time. That attachment is why her face has remained in my work.
Viewers see an unfamiliar person on the same screen where I see my wife. I do not make a point of revealing this relationship in the work. I have often seen viewers feel much closer to it after learning the background later.
The figure looks directly at viewers even when they do not know this relationship. The composition puts the person looking at the screen in the position of receiving a gaze as well. I have often seen viewers linger before images with almost no movement. At one outdoor LED display exhibition, preschool children pulled their parents over and pointed at my work. I read their response as an attraction to contrast and gaze, and took such bodily responses as clues to how an image might come to feel real.
Thinking about the position of the person looking brings me to Velázquez’s Las Meninas. The mirror at the back shows the king and queen watching the scene. In this sense, their position outside the picture becomes part of it too. When I see my wife’s face in my own work, I cannot set aside the memories of our time together. Those memories are also why an AI-generated image can feel real to me.
